The House on Tuesday passed a bill (H.R. 1429) by voice vote that aims to reduce the spread of HIV in federal prisons, CQ Today reports. Under the bill, sponsored by Rep. Maxine Waters (D-Calif.), the Federal Bureau of Prisons would be required to develop a new initiative for HIV testing, treatment and prevention. “We need to take the threat of HIV/AIDS seriously, and we need to confront it in every institution in our society,” Waters said, adding, “That includes our nation’s prison system” (Perine, CQ Today, 3/17).
