DID the HIV & AIDS pandemic begin about a century ago in Africa? This is the possibility an international team of scientists investigating African human tissue samples preserved for nearly at least half a century wants the world to accept. Based on their findings, they are saying the HIV & AIDS pandemic probably began at least 30 – 50 years earlier than currently envisaged, dating back to an era between 1884 and 1924, roughly the same time urbanization started growing in West and Central Africa.
“The intriguing report, published in the the October 2008 issue of the journal Nature was the work of a group of scientists led by Dr. Michael Worobey, an Assistant Professor of ecology and evolutionary biology at the University of Arizona in Tucson, and colleagues at research centres in Australia, Belgium, France, Democratic Republic of Congo, Denmark and the USA.”
